September is often a stressful month, as we suddenly have new family
schedules and the stress of school can be a burden on students and parents alike.
September is also National Family Meals month - an effort to highlight
the benefits of families enjoying more meals together at home. Studies show
that families who eat meals together three or more times a week
have an increased sense of well-being- in other words, less stress.
They have stronger family relationships and kids have increased self-
esteem and show more positive social behaviors. Family meals also
reduce risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol use and lead to better
grades for students.
It may seem stressful to add eating together as a family into an
already busy schedule, but there are many resources online to help. You
can be flexible with time and place – breakfast on the weekend or lunch after
a half-day is still eating a meal together. Planning meals, shopping and prep
are important and they can be shared among family members and add to the
experience. Continued sharing during the meal, with cell phones and TVs off,
will add to the family connectedness that is so important in fending
off stress. Commit to adding one more meal a week together as a family and
enjoy your time together.
