It appears I am all out of "funny" today. Too busy coping with the pain and discomforts of cancer and chemotherapy. For decades I've been a volunteer at HMC's Cancer Center and all the while thanking my lucky stars that I was just a volunteer. Then, after being assessed as the healthiest 90-year- old in Hunterdon County, I jumped the fence at 91 and became yet another cancer patient. So far I'm only into the first month of chemo and I have another five months to go. The caring and concern of everyone at HMC has been overwhelming. Dr. Blankstein treats me as if I am his only aging, cranky patient. The nurses who administer weekly chemotherapy treatments create a comfortable, friendly, pleasant environment in spite of the nasty stuff they are shooting into my veins. So, yes, I am receiving the best of care. But that doesn't negate the fact that all this cancer stuff is consuming my life and I allow myself regular "pity parties" to prove it. I really must get my act together soon!! Throughout this ordeal, which actually began in January, so much love and kindness has engulfed me. Friends and family are rooting for me and together we are thumbing our noses at my dysfunctioning pancreas. Tom, a Newsletter reader I have yet to meet in person, sends me regular videos that make me smile and laugh and is genuinely interested in my progress (or lack thereof). Flowers, cards, e-mails and phone calls rev up my spirits on a daily basis. I often think of an old saying that's something like "…unless you walk in my moccasins…". Who can know what a fellow human being is going through? If the supermarket checker isn't up to her usual cheery demeanor I wonder what kind of day she has been having. Maybe the driver of that Honda Civic is hogging the fast lane because his mind is on a sick child or an overdue electric bill. Give a break to the gas station attendant who's glued to his cell phone and barely says hello. Right about now I surely hope no one has to walk in my moccasins (well, my New Balance sneakers) – healthwise, at least. For the days I am really in the pits I refer to the following poem that resides permanently on the fridge: Razors pain you, Rivers are damp Acids stain you, And drugs cause cramp Guns aren't lawful, Nooses give Gas smells awful, Might as well live! I'll find a happier subject next month! The challenge will be to climb the equivalent number of stairs that the FDNY firefighters climbed in the World Trade Center prior to the collapses. This charitable event is meant to honor those who perished and to support those responders still suffering the effects of the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center. The event is open to all firefighters, first responders and community members that would like to participate in the stair climb, which will take place in the parking garage on the campus of Hunterdon Medical Center. Registration for individuals is $25 per person and $100 for teams of five people. To register visit this link: http://bit. ly/firefighterstairclimb. Proceeds from this event will benefit the FEALGood Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to spread awareness and educate the public about the catastrophic health effects on 9/11 first responders, as well as to provide assistance to relieve these great heroes of the financial burdens placed on them.
