Yoga Teacher Are you looking for an all-natural way to boost your mood, improve your memory and protect your brain against age related cognitive decline? Cardio can help! Research and new studies from the Harvard Medical School suggest that any type of exercise that raises your heart rate and has you moving and sweating for a sustained period of time is known as aerobic exercise. It has been discovered that this type of exercise has a significant beneficial impact on the brain. "Aerobic exercise is the key to your head as well as your heart" suggests the authors of a recent article entitled, Mind and Mood. The mood benefit emerges as soon as a few minutes on a sweaty bike ride or run. The improved memory may take a few weeks to crop up so building up time spent doing cardio is important. The recommended amount of time to get the most benefit is at least 30-45 minutes most days of the week. This can be simply taking a brisk walk outside or on a treadmill. There are other options at the gym such as the elliptical, stationary bike and versa climber. Another bonus is the reduction of natural stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. Researchers are still not sure why this type of exercise appears to help boost brain power, but studies do suggest it has to do with increased blood flow which provides our brain with fresh energy and oxygen. Studies have also found a link to increased size of the Hippocampus, a part of the brain that is involved in learning and memory. It's time to get started! That's why when the opportunity to help the township's Police Department acquire a K-9 officer came around, my Firm was happy to contribute. K-9 dogs help perform certain law enforcement tasks more effectively and protect their fellow officers. Their training can be costly, but the benefits a K-9 unit brings to the department are invaluable. Rotolo Karch Law is thankful for the opportunity to have helped defray the cost of training K-9 Tapko and his handler Sgt. John Tiger. K-9 dogs have been used in law e n f o r c e m e n t since the Middle A g e s a n d f o r g o o d r e a s o n : T h e y c a n s e a r c h an area four times f a s t e r a n d w i t h more accuracy than humans can; their sense of smell is about 10,000 times more acute than a person's, which aids in their detection abilities; their keen senses alert them to danger long before humans can sense it which, in turn, reduces the risks to the dog's fellow officers. While K-9 dogs perform a multitude of services, individual dogs are trained for specific tasks: detection (arson, explosives, narcotics); tracking (lost persons, suspects, cadavers); crowd control; suspect detention. K-9 Tapko and Sgt. John Tiger trained for patrol and narcotics at the K-9 Academy in Bergen County, where they graduated this past May. Welcome aboard! – Victor Rotolo
