One thing I love about writing this column is that it allows me to reach
out to all of you, in your homes, where you are most comfortable, and
give you my thoughts. Sometimes you guys give me yours as well. I
appreciate hearing from all of you, whether in person around town, or
via email here at the office.
As I have no journalism degree, I've fashioned a couple of rules for
myself in writing this column. Can't discuss politics (broke that one),
can't discuss sex (this is a family publication!), and I shouldn't discuss
religion -- although I'm happy to run your articles for events for two of
the above topics.
I have to be careful when mentioning anyone's name. I need to write
the column as well as a graphic designer (who hasn't stepped foot in
an English class in 30+ years) possibly can. I have to be careful of
mentioning my family members names and/or describing their lives
-- they're not fond of me doing that. (You'll notice I've never mentioned
my children's names, nor my husband's name in this publication.) It's
good to be humorous, but not too funny-haha -- if you know what I
mean. I would like to make you think, while adding a humorous touch,
if possible -- not too easy.
I can't brag about my children -- they do check up on that. (Oh, but
I would love to!) I never want to be insensitive. I would like this to be
somewhat erudite, as I believe you are all pretty damn smart. I shouldn't
ever use a curse-word here (oops). I have to remember that what seems
really interesting to me might be really interesting to ONLY me. I have to
divulge some of my life and my thoughts, or else I feel this column would
be really dry. And I have to find the line between the two above concepts.
You probably would not enjoy reading, "A funny thing happened to
me at my latest gyno appointment." I shouldn't use too many idioms,
metaphors, or be overly hyperbolic. And on and on...
I love the fact that wherever I go in Clinton Township and in Hunterdon
County, this publication is a conversation-starter like no other. For
example, I'll be in ShopRite and a friend or acquaintance will walk up
to me and say, "About that column..." It might have been last month's,
or several months ago, or even one of last year's, but they remember it
and they're happy to discuss it. I love having that connection with you
all, even when writing this is difficult. As I've said to my kids, imagine
writing a piece of copy that will potentially be read by 20,000 readers.
And imagine that some of them know you... what would YOU write?
As always, thank you so much for reading us!
