EDITOR'S COLUMN J u l i e F ly n n , E d i t o r "I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the years'." –Henry Moore In this month of making resolutions, I'm reminded of the time I told Fred Keesing, original owner of this Newsletter, my tentative threeyear-plan. He looked me sternly in the eye and said, "Do me a favor. Never again tell a 97 year-old man your 3-year plan." Ouch. I had grown comfortable, in my magical way of thinking, with the idea that he would live forever, or at least live to be 100 (as was his 3-year plan). I suppose that while he had a lot of hope, he was quite realistic, more so than I. At the same time he would humor me when I talked about the huge party we would throw for his 100th birthday. Unfortunately, I discovered the true folly of my words when later that year, he did, in fact, pass on. Somehow I was shocked that one couldn't magically live to be 100 just by deciding to. Unfortunately, cancer had a different plan. This month would have been his 100th birthday so here's to you, Fred. I hope you're having a blast wherever you are and, if I actually liked Scotch, I would have a double for you right now. Speaking of goals and resolutions, I've never been good about writing these things down. Whenever anyone asks me what some of my goals are (besides that one particular 3-year plan), I'm usually flummoxed. "Um, to be a good mother? A good wife? To continue to help pay the mortgage? To remain alive?" When, a couple of years ago, Amy Schwartz asked each member of our bookclub what our goals were, I could only think of the words"To remain status quo." How lame. (And yes, the bookclub gave me hell for that one.) Who remains status quo? Everything changes, whether I like it or not. And did I even wish for things to stay the same as they were at that time? I'm happy to say that life has gotten even better since then, albeit tired-er. More tiring? (Whatever.) Recently I was invited to join a goal-setting group of five businesswomen, started by my neighbor Julie Kaminski (and author of the book, The Flourishing Home.) The point of this circle is to meet once a month to discuss each member's latest business goals and then to collectively figure out methods to best reach those objectives. It's a great concept, except that I'm realizing that it goes against my own past personal method. It took me 40-something years to figure out that my approach to achieving my aspirations (and I'm not saying this way is best, by any means) is to visualize that which I want to accomplish, and then to work daily doing whatever I can to get closer to that target. For some reason (I don't know why), I have a hard time writing anything down or formalizing the process. Therefore, when it's my turn to speak at these monthly meetings, I'm left saying, "Ummm..." By the way, I do resolve to fix this... I think. Last month I hit on my business goal/resolution and was finally able to verbalize it. Here goes: I resolve to make this publication the best little Newsletter it can possibly be. We at the Newsletter devote part of each day towards making that goal a reality, and we're counting on you to help us achieve it, by letting us know whenever we're heading off-course. Of course, we love it when you let us know that we're doing a good job, too. When you email us or stop us around town to talk about the Newsletter, it truly makes our day. More importantly, it makes this job a lot more fun. Ruth, a former theater major, says it's like getting applause wherever she goes, and I would have to agree. Lori M.
