By: Kate Dougherty – NASM Certified Personal Trainer, SCW Group Fitness Instructor The sun is out, the days are getting longer - summer is here! It's the time of year when we begin to venture outside and enjoy nature. Your body is waking up from colder days, it wants to be active. If you're looking for a way to increase your energy and enjoy the season, consider a walking program. Walking is the easiest and cheapest option to begin. Just do it. Get up and walk for 15 minutes. It doesn't matter if it's inside or out. Increase your time daily, adding 5 minutes a day until you are walking for 30 min. If you can walk 30 min a day, 5 days a week you will fulfill the daily recommended exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. A simple walk provides many benefits including increased cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness and reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. It improves conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes. It helps prevent cancer, lung disease, and many, many other illnesses. A walk can improve your mood and clear your head and help you think creatively. Walking has no side effects, is easily accessible, affordable, effective, and best of all, you don't need a prescription! So get out and walk!
