After more pancreatic problems than you want to hear about, I was finally sent to Morristown Medical Center for "Whipple" surgery (go online and read about it but be prepared to freak out). Major stuff which involved removing and reconstructing a large part of my gastrointestinal tract. They predicted I would need seven days in the hospital followed by several weeks in rehab. Well, I'm overjoyed to report that I left the hospital in six days and the physical therapist said that I could walk better than she could and would, therefore, not require a rehab stay. Yeah! My daughter brought me home yesterday and although I am most certainly in discomfort and pain (try coughing and sneezing after a Whipple!), taking a shower and washing my hair after a week qualifies as HEAVEN to this old lady. It's funny how unimportant many things become when you're facing a possible death sentence. I can let that crumb on the kitchen floor sit there unattended; I can wait to put today's letters in the mail tomorrow morning; I can let the dirty laundry rest comfortably on the bedroom floor because I can't venture to the basement laundry yet. I slept ten hours last night. The worst part of that hospital was the beds. (Well, I could list many other "worsts," but who wants to hear about them? Surely not Morristown Medical Center.) Once you're in the bed you sink to the middle and slide to the bottom with resigned fervor – never to rise to the surface again until the nurses do their thing and pull you back to ground level which lasts about 2-1/2 minutes before you submerge once more. And they checked my "vitals" every thirty seconds, trying hard to wait until I was fully asleep. I don't know how the food tasted because I was on a clear liquid diet of apple juice, Jello, broth, and a frozen lemon popsicle. Positively inedible. Now I have graduated to baked potato with no skin, applesauce, and canned fruit. Not the way I planned to eat in my twilight years. But then this is not the way I planned to live. One bit of humor in all of this. Apparently I was so out of it the morning after surgery that I accused the medical staff of incompetence. I also got my cell phone and threatened to call my lawyer if they didn't shape up. I was just being my usual nut-case self. Somehow that makes me feel better. Looking forward to a healthier future, or maybe just any future! Will I make it to 92? 5 t h G r a d e B o y s P i c k u P B a s k e t B a l l – F u n a n d P r a c t i c e d u r i n G t h e s u m m e r Last year we developed a team for 4th grade travel basketball for the winter season and, at the end of the season, some of those boys expressed interest in getting together to play fun pickup games during the summer. So, beginning June 23 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm (or so) we will get together at Heritage Park/Vliet-Farm Road in Bethlehem (Heritage Park, Rt 173, Asbury, NJ 08802). Just to be clear, this is not related to the travel program or tryouts, it's simply a fun way for boys entering 5th grade in the fall to get together to work on skills and play basketball together. If you would like to be emailed with updates for these pickup games, in case the location needs to be changed on any given week, please email Bob Hesser at: bobhesser8@gmail.com with your email address. Tryouts for the Boys 5th Grade Travel Basketball team will be held sometime in the early fall. The team will play in the JBA league. If you think your child may be interested in the travel basketball program, is entering 5th grade in the fall of 2019, and is in a district feeding into North Hunterdon, then he is eligible to tryout.
