UV rays reflected off sand and water can cause eyes to sunburn, potentially resulting in temporary blindness in just a few hours. Although this condition is temporary, it is no less concerning at the time. Usually lubricants are used for comfort until the front surface of the eye heals. Staring at the sun for extended lengths of time can result in permanent retinal damage including permanent blindness. The sun can burn a hole though the macula, a part of the retina that allows our eyes to see centrally. Protection is the most important way to prevent damage. Polarized sunglasses with 100% UV protection are the best to decrease the amount of light and glare from entering the eye. Transition lenses are a great alternative for patients who need to wear a prescription and do not want to switch eyeglasses. It is always a good idea to wear a large pair of sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eye area. A brand new invention in contact lenses is the Acuvue Oasys Transition lenses. The contacts get darker when exposed to sunlight. They can be worn under non-prescription sunglasses or alone. Many athletes and those who work outdoors are ideal candidates for the lenses.
