W i t h p i c t u r e s q u e l a n d s c a p e s , a fully stocked stream-fed pond and postcard worthy views, this 47 acre slice of Hunterdon heaven can't be kept secret anymore! And thanks to the Hunterdon County Educational Services Commission (HESC), it doesn't have to be! In the summer of 2017, in conjunction with BaseCamp 31, a not-for-profit with a mission of community health, the Beautiful Beast 15k was born to bring together people who enjoy the trails of Hunterdon County and who are passionate about relying on their health and fitness to make a difference! With a course that takes in the sounds of the Columbia trail, the serene setting of Ken Lockwood Gorge, and provides participants with views that would make any nature photographer green with envy, our goal in producing this event is to challenge the status quo while supporting ESC's efforts to raise much needed funds to support environmental and animal science programs. There's just one catch...to get to the finish line, it's a BEAST of a climb... up Hoffman's Crossing... a hill fit for any King (or Queen)! So if you're ready to soak in some HC beauty, challenge yourself, and make a difference, join us (walkers and runners welcome) on June 8 for Hunterdon's most beautiful race! Certified Personal Trainer It has recently been reported that the United States is the most stressed country in the world. The fast pace of our lives can lead to stress and burnout and the feeling that you can't enjoy things or feel good about yourself. You may notice that emotions become elevated, and feelings of anger, frustration or sadness are overwhelming you. These are often aspects of our lives that we try to avoid and keep bottled up inside. The practice of meditation can give you the opportunity to not only address negative emotions, but also to find calm in the crazy storm of your life. Many people have the misconception that meditation takes too long. They think that it's something they can't fit into their already busy lives. The truth is, meditation is a very personal thing and it can be or become whatever is right for you. In other words, there is no right or wrong way to do it. You can begin by finding just a few minutes to yourself in a quiet, relaxing place. Find a comfortable position and let your body start to settle. Close your eyes and try to turn down the volume switch in your mind. It may take time and practice to learn how to do this and that is normal. The most common focus is your breath because it is safe and stable. Our thoughts are an important part of the meditation process. We are not trying to get rid of them, just acknowledging them, letting them be and not reacting to them. When we steady our body and mind, our mind has a space to relax and expand. This helps us to be more fully present, keep things in perspective and may even be an unexpected source of happiness. Numerous studies have shown that mediation has health benefits. There is a growing awareness of the link between our state of mind and our physical health. Quite often physical ailments are symptoms of inner turmoil. When stress and anxiety lower, many physical disorders can be helped. Meditation can give us peace of mind and help us to live a happier, healthier life.
