So far they have visited the site, sketched their ideas, found the area and perimeter and researched native plants and trees. The next steps include researching the materials that they envision in their plans (plants, trees, soil, seating, umbrellas, tables, stepping stones, etc) and preparing a cost statement outlining the costs of the project. 4th Grade Scientists: The 4th grade scientists are creating devices proving the transfer of potential energy to kinetic energy. After the study of energy transfer the scientists work in groups to develop a design of their device, a written explanation using scientific terms, a diagram of the design labeling its parts, as well as a prototype proving the transfer of energy. Final products are presented and demonstrated. Fourth graders enjoy taking part in scientific Project Based Learning and demonstrating their love of science. 3rd Graders Learn about Government and History: 3rd Graders were able to relive history on a field trip to the Old Barracks in Trenton. New Jersey is considered the Crossroads of The American Revolution with the Old Barracks at its center. Built in 1758, the Old Barracks is the last remaining of its type and students explored what life was like for British and American soldiers. On their trip students also toured the New Jersey State House, which is the Capitol Building for New Jersey. The visit brought civics to life for students as they toured the Senate and General Assembly chambers to learn about bills and how laws are made. The Executive State House is currently being renovated, so students were escorted through the beautifully restored legislative chambers and learned about the history, art and architecture of the State House. This was an informative and hands-on experience that students will remember for years to come. Pennies for Patients: This March our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser to help raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the fight against blood cancer. Our school set a goal of raising $3000 and were able to meet that goal and surpass it by raising a total of $3984.68. Our top fundraising classroom was Mrs. Kirk's 3rd grade homeroom with a total of $1880.23 raised. Justin Smith from Mrs. Kirk's homeroom helped reach our goal with a total of $1675 raised all online. We had three other homerooms raise more than $100 and they are: Ms. Black and Ms. Erb, Ms. Decker, Mrs. Selbo and Mrs. Dmuchowski and Mrs. Johnson. Our top fundraising homeroom will be celebrating their achievement with a pizza party provided by Domino's Pizza and Justin Smith and his family have been invited to an appreciation dinner to be held at the Pines Manor. Thank you everyone for your tremendous support.
