A practical guide for surviving the tasks associated with the death of a loved one", addresses Probating a Will, Social Security, Military Benefits, Funeral Information and other relevant subjects. And, most importantly, What To Do While Everybody is Still Alive. If you'd like to buy a copy, please email Ruth @ ruth.ella@comcast.net. There are a few very small items in my life that I've found uses for other than that which they were intended. I use a needle to poke a hole in the top of a plastic Lemon Juice container to facilitate easy pouring. I use a needle (sterilized with alcohol) to remove splinters from my fingers. Needles work well cleaning the gunk off of a faucet aerator. I use one to score waxed paper before shaping pieces to line a cookie tin. What I DON'T use a needle for is sewing! My Mother never sewed a stitch in her life and I've been lucky to inherit whatever genes that represents. Occasionally I'll make a feeble attempt to sew a button on a shirt. I can actually thread the d--- thing but am ill-equipped to tie a knot at the end of the thread. So I either remove another button or two to even things up or, in some cases, place the item in a donation bag. (Maybe some far off recipient will know how to mend). As for buttons, I probably have over 500 miscellaneous buttons in what I laughingly call my "sewing box". (Ha Ha!) I use toothpicks to clean the mud from my sneaker soles after a morning walk following a heavy rainfall. I like to "use and discard" stuff. Toothpicks tell me when the cake layer or bread pudding is done in the oven. Toothpicks clean the mud from my fingernails after weeding the gardens. Toothpicks spear the olive in a Martini. Oh, and yes, they do come in handy to remove the spinach from my bottom teeth after a hearty salad. Tweezers have a special place in my world. Besides tweezing an errant hair from my eyebrows or chin, they will grab at stuff a human hand can't. They pick up whatever that piece of plastic is in pill containers. (What is that for, anyway?) They are excellent for removing cotton wads from pill containers as well. I understand that they are fine for removing ticks from your skin. So far I haven't had a need for that minor surgery but, living in Hunterdon County, the possibility of such an operation is quite high. One larger household product that I NEVER use is an iron. I haven't ironed an article of clothing since the days I hung cloth diapers on an outside clothesline. If it isn't "wash and wear", it doesn't live at 29 Charlotte Drive. I recall with chagrin the days I actually ironed my husband's boxer shorts, dish towels and sheets. Incredible! On the other hand, I still get on my hands and knees to butcher wax my wood floors. Getting up from that position is a real challenge so I often find other things to do while I'm down there. always welcome. A food processor, rice cooker, French fryer... not so much. Call me lazy or inventive. Either way there is little hope for change. Hell, I'm 91!!! Become a Friend of The Clinton Guild! Do you LOVE Downtown Clinton and want to help?
