Under the guidance of Aquatic Director Flora Mannino, more than 30,000 Hunterdon County children and adults have learned to swim at the Y. With a focus on water safety and self- survival skills starting with the youngest child in the parent-child program, the Y's swim lesson curriculum begins with swimming readiness skills and, as results are achieved, progresses to stroke introduction, refinement and technique. Lessons are offered in a 10 week session and an accelerated 5 week session, with classes that meet twice per week. There are daytime, evening and weekend options. Lessons are 45 minutes in length, which provides enhanced time for skill development. The upcoming accelerated 5 week session starts on May 6. Mannino states, "I believe all people can enjoy the health benefits of water at every age and stage of their life and they don't need to be elite swimmers to participate. I started working for the YMCA because I saw it as a place to use my skills and do something I loved. I have stayed because I help the Y make a difference to the children and families we serve." Y swim lessons accommodate students of varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. The results are more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime. The Y runs year-round swim lessons for all ages and levels, as well as lifeguard certification. Additionally, the Y hosts free community events including National Learn to Swim Day, the World's Largest Swim Lesson and the second grade Learn to Swim Program. For more information or to find the class that's right for you or your child, visit: www.HCYMCA.org/swim-lessons or contact Flora Mannino at: fmannino@hcymca.org. A confidential financial assistance program is available for community members in need so that no person is excluded from YMCA programs. g i r l s C O u t s e r v i C e u n i t 8 1 ' s i n f O r m a t i O n a l O p e n h O u s e New troops are forming!
