A practical guide for surviving the tasks associated with the death of a loved one", addresses Probating a Will, Social Security, Military Benefits, Funeral Information and other relevant subjects. And, most importantly, What To Do While Everybody is Still Alive. If you'd like to buy a copy, please email Ruth @ ruth.ella@comcast.net. There's St.Peter at the gates of heaven... There's Satan at the gates of hell. And then there's Bill at the front door of Hunterdon Medical Center greeting and assisting visitors to the hospital. This is the guy who, when I was a patient, visited me on his day off with news and newspapers. What's not to love? For 30 years I've been volunteering at HMC and for 30 years I've spent every Tuesday afternoon interacting with the Security Guards. They make my day! Dave is a gourmet cook and we exchange information about cuts of beef, the art of roasting brussel sprouts and the merits of single malt Scotch. He convinced me to buy a rotisserie and then, when I couldn't assemble the darn thing, made a house call to put it together for me. Roy is my confidant and probably knows more about my colorful past than anyone else on the planet. He has promised to throw his body on mine in case a terrorist enters the front door with a gun. I've pleaded with him to practice this maneuver (readiness!) but he has consistently, politely but firmly declined. I can't win them all. John helps me with crossword puzzles during slow times. He should be teaching school somewhere instead of monitoring the hallways. He's one of the "young-uns" and I would categorize him as grandson material. Holly is a recent female Security Guard and we get along well because she laughs at stuff I say even if it's not funny. She would be granddaughter material. The "other" Dave no longer works on Tuesday afternoons and I miss sharing ailments with him. He was known as "Big Dave" until the current Dave came along. Guess he would be Big Dave #2 now. There are some I don't see often because our schedules don't jive. They would be Ismar, two Dans and Brian. He's the "late Brian" in my book, not because he is tardy or dead, but because he now works elsewhere at HMC. All folks who brighten my day and help keep the hospital a safe place. I have two very cool bosses – Karen and Kenan. They don't pay me a salary so I don't really have to like them, but I do. They make me feel needed and wanted and, outside of my family, no one else does it so convincingly. In addition, I enjoy sharing time with fellow volunteers. We all seem to care about each other and gather at the annual Volunteer Luncheon to receive our just due – food, not money! And just so I don't omit any of the "heavies", the doctors with whom I've had contact a lot lately due to a health issue have a special place in my heart and my pancreas. They are trying to keep me functioning. Dr. Kenneth Blankstein, Dr. Jason Thanks and kudos to all! P.S. A recent broken left foot adds Dr. Eliot Decker to my list.
