I mean, how wonderful would Spring be if we hadn't survived another miserable Winter? It's like the feeling you must have when someone stops hitting you on the head with a hammer. Such profound relief! I've often wondered how boring it must be to live in Florida. You could sleep for months and when you wake up you'd have no idea what month it is. It's hot and humid. So what? It's always hot and humid and the palm trees sway in mid-December. This Spring, for me, is better than usual because I'm aware my future Springs are numbered. There are few pleasures in life I appreciate more than sitting on my breezeway watching the grass grow. Roadside nurseries beckon me to purchase daffodils and tulips and little green plants. Whatever a "green thumb" is I don't have one, so Mother Nature sheds a tear or two when a healthy flowering anything comes to live at 29 Charlotte Drive, knowing its lifetime is limited. However, it doesn't discourage me from trying to nurture their stubborn roots and leaves. Spring means thumbing my nose at the basement treadmill and welcoming once again the walks I can take outside. Neighbors often decorate around their mailboxes with a variety of plants and flowers. Alas, mine remains void of any live enhancements because whatever I plant starts to droop before I put the spade away. Don't suggest fertilizer/manure. That, too, seems to be a lost cause. However, thanks to the kindness of Clinton Township, who reimbursed me for the mailbox and post that the street pavers demolished last August, my new one is straight and steady and standing at attention by the curb. (John Higgins kept his promise and I am very appreciative!) This Spring my son will come for an extended visit. (Who, at age 69, is finally retiring) Because of his work schedule he has had to come in March for many decades and we end up spending lazy days in the house being snowbound. (Hardly much of a treat for someone from Minnesota). A Spring trip will allow us to savor a few outside activities. Maybe a trip to the shore with my daughter and son-in-law or a day at Grounds for Sculpture. Best of all, it will be gin and tonic time again. If there is a downside to Spring it's the relentless heat and make a doctor's appointment or a luncheon date with friends I can rest assured Harold will not be stuck in the garage due to icy roads and an unforgiving driveway. So hail to a new season. Enjoy!! Locally Owned and Operated by Phil & Diane Koury 185 Center St., Clinton | 908.735.4499 Do you LOVE Downtown Clinton and want to help?
