A caregiver is anyone who regularly looks after and is responsible for a child, elder or chronically ill person. According to this definition, many of us in the community are considered caregivers even if we don't self-identify that way. Caregivers are at increased risk for stress and stress related illness because the role is often all-consuming. The health and wellness of the caregiver herself can easily get lost. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is natural to feel angry, frustrated, alone or sad. Knowing that you are not alone and that it is okay to accept help can aid in reducing stress. Focus on what you can provide while keeping in mind that it isn't possible to be perfect. Prioritize and begin to say no to requests that are too draining. Consider joining a support group and stay well connected to the family and friends you already have to maintain your own sense of self. Continue to take care of your own health with good sleep and regular checkups – ask your doctor for help if anything in your own wellness seems abnormal. Remember that you need to take care of yourself to be a good caregiver for anyone else.
