Please visit the 1760 Turner House Museum on October 12 and 13 for illustrated talks and a presentation of period artifacts which explore the arts and culture of Victorian mourning customs. The parlor of the historic 1760 Turner House at 117 VanSyckles Road will be set up as it would have been for a Victorian mourning. Costumed docents will be on hand to greet visitors. Some of the topics will include widows weeds and weeping veils, postmortem photography, hair jewelry and other mourning accessories, the social expectations of a family in mourning in Victorian times, gravestone motifs and other related topics. The tours will include some artifacts from the collection at Turner House and antique items on loan from other sources. Some of these items include a "toe pincher" coffin from long time local resident Doug Martin, a retired funeral director, a hair wreath, hair and jet jewelry, cabinet cards and other items. Admission is $5 per person. Tours are 7:00 pm-8:00 pm and 8-9:00 pm on Oct. 12 and 1-2:00 pm and 2:00 pm-3:00 pm on October 13. Reservations are required. Please contact: UFHAevents@hotmail.com or call: 908.209.4201 to make reservations. Next explore our formal parlor for a unique display of vintage women's fashion from our recently acquired vintage garment collection dating from the 1830s through the 1920s. Admission is $7 per person at the door, 12:00 pm-4:00 pm, October 20. Please contact the Union Forge Heritage Association at: UFHAevents@ hotmail.com for more information.
