Unsteadiness? Older age? Injury? All of these relate to balance in their own way. Balance is a topic of health and fitness that I believe is not talked about enough. Working with the older adult population, I see balance problems every day because of a variety of reasons and the main ones being the ones listed above. Balance is a type of exercise that requires a lot of patience. The key in training your balance is being unsteady in the process. I always tell my clients that if they are not shaky while training balance than they are not training their balance correctly. Balance also requires strength. Having good balance means that your muscles are strong. It is important for people of all ages to not neglect their balance training and add some weights into their routine during the balance exercise to optimize their training session. One fast fact that I love about balance is that your big toe plays hardly any role in balance, you could be without your big toe and still stand on that foot and be steady (assuming you were steady to begin with).
