Call 908.797.3881 We'll Make Your Money Work For You! retirement planning services I'm sure that a teenage me would have dismissed the notion that at age 90 my heart would fill with joy over a road being paved. But so it is. After countless phone calls to the Clinton Township Road Department relating woes about what I thought must have been the bumpiest road in all of Hunterdon County, the pavers came! Visitors would reinforce my chagrin by declaring Charlotte Drive a disaster area as well. Thank you, CTRD for making my daily "commute" a pleasure instead of a penance (even though my mailbox was demolished by the pavers!) It got me to examining my life as it was 75 years ago seeing through the lens of 2018. If you had told me, as a teenager, that my life would be enhanced with the paving of a road some decades in the future, I'm sure I would have scoffed at the very idea. So I made a list of the "then" unlikely celebratory events that make the "now" me a happier person. 1. I am overjoyed at a full night's sleep minus any trips to the bathroom. 2. I relish an entire 24 hour period without a single annoying marketing phone call. I don't know anyone in Belle Meade or Armonk, NY so stop calling already. That never happened in the 1940's. 3. I love those weekly visits with my favorite friend, my daughter Sally. We totally enjoy each other's company. I am so thankful she lives close by so we can share our lives and she can keep me in line. Who'd have thought it when she was a squalling infant who freaked me out for months? 4. I look forward to the twice yearly visits from my son Steve from Minnesota. The kid whom I once spanked so hard through his dungarees that my hand was bruised for a week. And he really WANTS to visit his aging mother. 5. Ah – the comfort of my reliable 12 year Honda, Harold. He requires a minimum of service and when that time comes I depend on Mike, Darren and Ray at Readington Tire. The visits are a pleasure and less costly than you might think. Imagine such joy in that old buggy. 6. My faith in life is restored when the biopsy comes back as benign. Did I even know what that word meant those many years ago? My team of "ologists" are responsible for keeping this ancient body humming and I am grateful. 7. Would I have ever believed that giving one day a week as a hospital volunteer would enrich my life beyond expectations? How different are my needs and desires at this time of my life. My bucket list is short and simple really. Dare I wonder what the next five years will offer? Ruth Keesing's booklet "What Do I Do Now? A practical guide for surviving the tasks associated with the death of a loved one", addresses Probating a Will, Social Security, Military Benefits, Funeral Information and other relevant subjects. And, most importantly, What To Do While Everybody is Still Alive.
