Research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology has looked at the "mind-body" connection and a growing body of evidence shows that stress can lower immunity and lead to illness. Even a few days of stress can lead to decreased ability to fight off infections like the common cold. Chronic stress, over days and months, has been associated with increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol which, over the long term, contributes to everything from heart disease to diabetes. The good news is that research has also shown that decreasing our stress levels can boost our immune systems. Studies in which participants engaged in exercise or mindfulness meditation techniques showed increased levels of cells that fight off infection. Even something as simple as increasing time with family or friends have been shown to strengthen our immune systems. Actively trying to "not sweat the small stuff" may make you healthier, so give it a try! Multiple New Dealers!
